All signs were pointing to a walkaway win for the long-awaited sequel to The Shining, but Roland Emmerich's WWII drama Midway pulled off a sneak attack for the top spot at the box office with $17.5M.
Settling for second place, Doctor Sleep wasn't so much ambushed by a monster opening fromMidway, but an extremely disappointing number in its own right. While most projections were suggesting an opening in the mid-to-high $20M range,Doctor Sleep's $14.1M is extremely troubling both for the film and for anyone who placed it in their Top 10 for the season.
Premiering in third place, the Jon Cena-led comedy Playing with Fire pulled off a lukewarm $12.8M while fourth place went to the rom-com Last Christmas, which opened to a somewhat chilly $11.6M.
Rounding out the Top Five, last week's #1—Terminator: Dark Fate—had a disastrous 63% drop after its humble $29M opening. With $10.8M this weekend, Dark Fate sits at $48.5M after 10 days.
