Disney's latest live-action family adventure, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, had little trouble taking the top spot at the box office, despite opening to nearly half as much as its 2014 predecessor. The sequel's $36M premiere was good enough for first place, but pales in comparison to the $69.4 the series' previous entry managed, but even with its subpar numbers Mistress of Evil still has a good shot at cracking the Top 10 this season.
Dropping into second place after two weekends on top, Joker continued to hold well in its third weekend—down just 47.7% with $29.2M for a new 17-day total of $247.2M and a solid hold on the top spot for the Fall season.
Premiering in third place, the weekend's other new sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, knocked out $26.7M—nearly identical to the original film's $24.7M opening way back in 2009. For a decade-old franchise that's not half bad. Still, it doesn't look likeDouble Tapis on tap to crack the Top 10 for the season.
In fourth place, The Addams Family scared up $16.1M in its second weekend, a 47% drop. Through 10 days, the animated family flick has earned $58.6M and looks to be headed for a photo finish in regards to a Top 10 placement this season.
In fifth place, Gemini Man had a rough second weekend—down 58.6% with $8.5 for a new grand total of $36.5M through 10 days.
