After its record-setting opening weekend, Joker continued to dominate the box office with a fantastic $55M follow up. That's a drop of just 42.8%—virtually unheard of for a franchise property such as this, and the best second-weekend number for any film in October. Through 10 days the gritty comic drama has already earned $192.7M and is starting to look like a potential $300M contender and a lock for the top spot for the Fall season.
Opening in second place, the animated incarnation of The Addams Family fared quite well with an ooky $30.3M premiere. Although audience ratings have been only mildly warm, with no serious competition in the animated space until next month's Frozen 2, the Addams could show some solid legs.
Opening in third place, Ang Lee's Will Smith starrer Gemini Man managed a meager $20.5M. That's Smith's lowest opener since 1998s Enemy of the State ($20M). With rather disastrous reviews, Gemini Man will be lucky to eke out anything north of $50M.
In fourth place, Abominable was down 48.2% in its third weekend with $6.2M for a new total of $47.9M with fifth place going to Downton Abbey—which picked up $4.9M in its fourth weekend (-38.7%) for a new total of $82.7M and a virtual guarantee to finish in the Top 10.
