Despite slipping into second place on Friday after a 14-day run at the top, Avengers: Endgame rallied over the weekend to earn its third-straight weekend win with $63.1M. That puts the MCU smash at $723.5M in its first 17 days—enough to overtakeBlack Pantherfor the highest grossing film in the franchise. While it looks like catching Star Wars: The Force Awakens' domestic record of $936M is unlikely, Endgame will certainly overtake the No. 2 ranked Avatar ($760.5M) sometime in the next week. For the season, Endgame has earned 366.4M.
Opening in second place, the live-action Pokémon flick Detective Pikachu delivered a $58M debut. Projections for this one were all over the map—many upwards of over $80M, and several as low as $50M—but with its opening weekend out of the way it looks like Pikachu should parlay its premiere into anywhere from $150M to $175M be season's end.
Settling for a third-place premiere, The Hustle managed $13.5M. That's similar to Rebel Wilson's Valentine's Day rom com ($14.2M), but the inclusion of Anne Hathaway and a Mother's Day weekend release date should have given it a higher earning potential. With poor audience reactions and even worse reviews, The Hustle doesn't look to hold well.
In fourth place, The Intruder was down 39.2% in its second weekend with $6.6M for a new 10-day total of $20.9M, while Long Shot added $6.1M (down 37.1%) in its sophomore frame for a fifth-place finish and a new grand total of $19.7M.
