The Secret Life of Pets 2 walked all over Dark Phoenix to take the top spot at the weekend box office with a $47.1M premiere. Despite its No. 1 opening, Pets came in far under most expectations in what was an all around subpar weekend for box office performance. The original Pets exploded to a $104M premiere in 2016—more than double the number of the sequel.
Opening even less impressively in second place, Dark Phoenix flamed out with just $33M—barely half of what 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse managed ($65.8M) and by far the worst premiere in the X-Men franchise. Phoenix seems destined to be the first film in the series to finish its run under $100M total.
In third place, Aladdin held well in its third weekend (down 42.8%)—adding another $24.5M for a new total of $232.4M through 17 days.
Fourth place went to last weekend's top earner, as Godzilla: King of the Monsters plummeted 67.5% in its sophomore frame for a $15.5M take. Through 10 days the monster mash up sits at $78.6M.
Rounding out the Top Five, Rocketman was down 45.6% in its second weekend with $14M. That gives the Elton John musical $50.5M through 10 days.
