The retconned continuation of the Terminator franchise had no problem finding a first-place finish in its opening weekend. However, with just $29M, Terminator: Dark Fate seems to have fallen short of re-invigorating the series. While it is an improvement on the $27M take of 2015's Terminator: Genisys, the return of star Linda Hamilton and another appearance by the original Terminator himself didn't deliver the uptick in interest that James Cameron and Co. had hoped for. For the Winter Season, Dark Fate's fate as a Top 10 finisher remains to be seen.
Holding strong in second place, Joker continued its amazing run with $13.9M in its fifth weekend (down just 29%) and looks to cross the $300M plateau sometime Monday.
Third place went to Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which earned $12.2M in its third weekend (down 37%) for a new 17-day total of $84.3M.
Opening in fourth place, the Oscar-hopeful biopic Harriet managed a $12M haul—making it an unlikely contender for the Winter season Top 10.
Rounding out the Top Five, The Addams Family added $8.5M in its fourth weekend (-29%) for a new cumulative total of $85.3M.
