How to play

Overview

In the Blockbuster Game you select the 10 movies you think will earn the most money at the box office over the course of the season, and rank them in the order you think they will finish. In addition, you select 3 more movies to place in your "Cheap Seats" that will earn you bonus fantasy dollars if they finish in the Top 10 for the season. These 13 movies represent your studio.

Over the course of the season your studio earns fantasy dollars based on the box office performance of your selected movies.

At the end of the season, you can earn bonus fantasy dollars based on the accuracy of your predicted Top 10 order (see Scoring for more details).

In-Season Adds/Drops

During the course of the season you can add, drop, or re-order movies in your Top 10 and Cheap Seats prior to their respective release dates. Once a movie is released, however, it is locked in its designated place for the remainder of the season. Movies that have already been released are also ineligible to be added to your studio. Movies typically open on Fridays and will lock at 11:59 PM EST the night before (i.e. Thursday before Midnight).

Scoring

Top 10 Rankings

Movies within your Top 10 Rankings will earn fantasy dollars equivalent to their box office performance between the start and end date of the season, provided that they continue to rank in the Top 10 overall movies for that season.

Cheap Seats

Movies placed in your “Cheap Seats” will earn fantasy dollars equivalent to half of their box office performance between the start and end date of the season, provided that they rank in the Top 10 overall movies for that season.

Exclusions

Once a movie falls outside the Top 10 for the season, whether in your Top 10 Rankings or your Cheap Seats, it will revert to $0 towards your studio total.

Money earned by a movie prior to the start of a season or after the end of a season will not be counted for that season.

Example: “Dunkirk” opens on Friday, July 21…

  • For the 2017 Summer Season, your studio would count earnings between the release date (Friday, July 21) and the season end date (Sunday, July 30).
  • For the 2017 Fall Season your studio would count earnings between the season start date (Monday, July 31) and season end date (Sunday October 29).

End-Of-Season Bonuses

In addition to the money earned by movies that finish within the Top 10 for the season, your studio will earn bonus dollars based on the accuracy of the predicted order of your Top 10 Rankings. Bonuses are awarded to any movie that finishes within two places of your predicted finish, as follows…

+$50M = Exact Match
+$25M = 1 Place Off
+$5M = 2 Places Off

Movies placed in your cheap seats are not eligible for additional bonuses.

Total Score

Your final studio score at the end of the season is the combined total of your Top 10 Rankings and Cheap Seats earnings, plus any end-of-season bonuses.

Seasons

The Blockbuster Game is split into four seasons every year as follows:

Summer = May / June / July
Fall = August / September / October
Winter = November / December / January
Spring = February / March / April

Specific weeks vary by year, but seasons are on average 13 weeks long. In general, seasons start on first Monday of the first month listed and end on the last Sunday of the last month listed.
